The purpose of this position is to provide highly functional, healthy, safe, secure, and aesthetically pleasing community college facilities in support of the Virginia Community College System mission to provide comprehensive higher-education and workforce-training programs and services of superior quality. This leadership position provides oversight, direction and coordination to ensure appropriate review and coordination of A&E plans for capital projects consistent with requirements of the capital outlay process for the Virginia Community College System and its 23 colleges. This reviewer is responsible for providing professional and technical expertise to assure that the applicable building codes and VCCS Construction & Professional Services Manual technical policies and practices are correctly applied and coordinated for the design of state-owned buildings and structures. This Reviewer also assures that VCCS projects conform to good construction practices, are economical solutions to program requirements, and manage the VCCS Annual Permit Process.
Knowledge, skill and ability in architectural design and engineering best practices. Knowledge of building code and constructability issues with design projects. Ability to coordinate with staff and consultants during the process of review and to perform high level administrative support in a higher education environment. Computer expertise with knowledge of Adobe, Microsoft Office and other electronic applications. Excellent organizational, communication, collaborative, and customer service skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Virginia License as a Registered Architect, or ability to obtain such within three years, and design experience are required, since the duties of this position include the review of building systems and construction documents prepared by licensed professionals and the authority to direct changes to such work. Registration as a Professional Engineer and a Certified Building Official will be considered with appropriate experience. Bachelor's Degree in architecture or Engineering with emphasis in building design Virginia driver's license - duties include limited travel to state institutions for meetings and inspections. ICC Building Plans Examiner and Commercial Building Inspector certifications within one year of employment Experience and knowledge in design and building construction practices of medium and large construction, renovations, and additions; coordinating engineering disciplines; and inspecting construction projects.
