The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences Ship Operations is seeking a Lead Inspector. This is a full-time 1.00 FTE, 12-month, professional faculty position.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU) has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to design and build up to three Regional Class Research Vessels (RCRV). The Lead Inspector will be the primary OSU inspector for shipyard contractor tests and trials at the shipyard.
Typically requires Bachelor of Science (BS) in a technical field applicable to managing the design, construction and operation of research vessels. Technical knowledge of ships and related equipment, maintenance operations, overhaul and design. Experience with research vessel operating requirements and conditions. Familiarity with applicable international and US regulations pertaining to the operation and maintenance of seagoing research vessels. Demonstrated experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, or construction management.
Bachelor of Science (BS) in a technical field applicable to managing the design, construction and operation of vessels, or equivalent combination of education, training, and minimum 10 years vessel inspection experience.
Technical knowledge of ships and related equipment, maintenance operations, overhaul and design.
Familiarity with applicable international and US regulations pertaining to the operation and maintenance of seagoing vessels.
Demonstrated experience in shipbuilding, or major vessel refit (repowering, underwater body repairs).
Lead Inspector must be available on weekends and holidays and, during trials must be available to work on a 24-hour basis. Inspector must also be available on a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the effort, occasional travel and working with others in different time zones. Normal level of effort is 40 hours per week. Inspector may be required to work during OSU observed holiday periods. Underway trial days for Inspectors will allow a minimum of 8 hours and maximum of 16 hours per day including overnights. Lead Inspector will frequently be in the industrial areas of yard and on board the vessel (required). Ship construction working conditions (required) include outdoor weather conditions; a nonstable environment (i.e., pitching, heaving, and rolling decks); a noisy environment; hot and confined spaces; exposure to toxic/caustic substances and fumes; climbing up and down vertical ladders and multiple story staircases; working in elevated areas (i.e., over six feet); move over and around structure and machinery, crawl in and out of small enclosed spaces, and pass through hatches and manholes as small as 18 inches in diameter. OSU complies with OSHA requirements.
