This position provides project management for various construction projects for Dakota Electric’s distribution system including electric substations. The projects managed by this position have a far-reaching impact and typically have a time critical completion schedule. To manage these projects this individual must coordinate the work of employees within Dakota Electric, coordinate the work of outside consultants, suppliers and vendors. This position is recognized as authoritative and makes decisions to keep project timelines and ensure safety.

Be responsible for reporting any un-safe practices and/or hazards to a supervisor, manager or Vice President. Be committed to and actively involved in Dakota Electric’s safety programs, initiatives and performance.
Project Management for substation construction projects, which includes;
Overall responsibility for the budget of managed projects.
The preparation of the physical and electrical design drawings for substation projects including layout, material lists, one-line diagrams, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
Coordination of the work done by Dakota Electric employees, of outside consultants, contractors, suppliers and vendors and ensure that the entire project is completed on-time, within budget and is functional when completed.
Identifies orders and coordinates deliveries of supplies and equipment needed for the project. Works with the vendors to resolve problems with the equipment and delivery.
Leads periodic project coordination meetings.
Prepares and maintains specifications for substation and certain distribution material and equipment.
Research and prepare purchase requisitions for various Dakota Electric projects. This includes looking at the equipment being ordered and understanding the interaction between other equipment ordered for the same project, so as to assure the proper interaction of the equipment ordered.
Administers the CAD system and maintains the integrity of project drawing files. Establishes and maintains CAD standards and provides some training on the standards established. Together with others, recommends changes in CAD hardware and software.
Provides general support work including; URD cable testing coordination; equipment specification maintenance; coordination with consultants; recommending engineering standards and other support work as required.
Perform related work as apparent or assigned.
Supervision/Direction of Others
Employee provides direction for Dakota Electric staff on the operation and application of the CAD system.
Employee provides direction to Technician Electricians for substation construction and other construction projects under this individual’s lead.
Employee provides direction for Utility Service field construction crews in design and construction issues involved with substation projects.
A bachelor’s degree in the following disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Project Management, or Construction Management required with an additional 5+ years of electric utility design experience.
Project management certification and/or Professional Engineering certification is preferred.
Recent and in-depth expertise in electric power systems.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
Good written/verbal communication skills.
The person holding this position must demonstrate a high degree of creativity, foresight and mature judgment in planning and organizing the projects that they are managing. This person must be able to negotiate critical and controversial issues with Dakota Electric staff, vendors and consultants.
The ability to work independently and make decision is critical.
Must be very familiar with Dakota Electric Association’s distribution system.
Must have thorough working knowledge of electrical schematic and wiring diagrams.
Must be skilled in the use of computer software and measuring instruments.
Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Skilled in both verbal and written communication.
Supports teamwork by providing effective participation, leadership, cooperation and communication. Must be able to accomplish projects by working through other team members.
Must be innovative in order to creatively develop new solutions to problems. Seeks, recommends, develops, supports and encourages new ideas.
Must have working knowledge of the standards and specifications for maintenance and construction for all electric plant facilities.
Must have thorough knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and Dakota Electric’s Safety Rules.
Should possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license.
Answers customer’s inquiries effectively by providing accurate, meaningful, and courteous responses to questions, in a timely manner.
This position requires the individual to work typical office hours. A majority of the work is inside office work. This position must be able to travel to the work site and inspect and interact with the field crews and supervisors. Some additional work hours will be required at times along with work outside the normal working hours. Occasional travel within the state of Minnesota and outside the state of Minnesota will be required to visit manufacturing facilities, attend training sessions, industry conferences and other work related activities.
Occasional work in area of energized high voltage equipment while carefully following established safety precautions.
Regular and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position. Variations to the work schedule need to receive the supervisor’s approval.
The physical demands for this position are identified on the Office/Professional template. Employee must have the ability to read computer screens and instruments as part of their normal activities. In addition, the Senior Project Leader is occasionally climbing in rugged terrain that may include hills and ditches and occasionally will have to wear a hard hat, safety vest, and safety glasses.
