The City of AustinDevelopment Services Department (DSD) assists homeowners, business owners, and contractors when they build, demolish, remodel or perform any type of construction to ensure compliance with applicable city and building codes.
DSD is seeking an Electrical Plan Examiner C level reviewer. This position is responsible for reviewing and processing permit applications related to commercial and multi-family development. This includes the review of construction plans to determine compliance with the electrical code and other relevant codes adopted by the City of Austin.
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are needed as this position will include daily interaction with the public, construction professionals, stakeholders, and internal employees. This position is also expected to review and comment on proposed rule adoptions or code amendments, review and assess for compliance single trade permit requests, assist in developing programs and procedures to administer codes/ordinances and assist internal employees and the public with the interpretation of regulations, processes, and procedures.
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major coursework in Planning, Architecture, Engineering, Geography, Landscape Architecture or other field related to design or construction and four (4) years of responsible experience in architecture, building inspection, or building plans examination.
One (1) additional year of relevant work experience may substitute for one (1) year of the required education with a maximum substitution of four (4) years. Master’s degree may substitute for experience up to a maximum of two (2) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
Electrical Plans Examiner C employees shall meet the requirements of an Electrical Plans Examiner B plus an ICC Commercial Energy Inspector / Plans Examiner Certification; or an additional certification in a related field by ICC, NFPA or other recognized authority.
An employee who is certified by ICC or other recognized authority as a Certified Building Official (CBO) shall be considered to have met the certification or licensing requirements for the Plans Examiner C position.
An employee who is a Texas registered professional engineer (PE) or is an active Engineer-In-Training (EIT) for a related discipline shall be considered to have met the certification or licensing requirements for the Plans Examiner C position.
Knowledge of City of Austin Land Development Code, the International Building Code, and the International Existing Building Code.
Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and the City of Austin Electrical amendments, International Energy Conservation Code, ASHRAE 90.1 and Sub Chapter E within the Land Development Code for exterior lighting.
Ability to read and interpret civil and architectural drawings for complex projects.
Progressively responsible experience in producing, reviewing, and/or approving design specifications and drawings for commercial construction projects.
