The Assistant Director of Sustainability and Energy Management (hereinafter “ADS”) provides both expertise and leadership to articulate and lead St. Lawrence University in delivering on its commitment to sustainability.  Reporting to the Associate Vice President/Chief Facilities Officer (hereinafter CFO), the ADS works as an integral member of the Campus Committee for Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality (CCSCN) to successfully meet the goals of the university’s Climate Action Plan (CAP).  The CAP calls for St. Lawrence University to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.  A successful candidate for this position is an innovative professional with excellent interpersonal and leadership skills who collaborates with partners both on and off campus to ensure the university meets the goals outlined in the CAP and ongoing efforts toward holistic sustainability.  This is a full-time position.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Work with the CCSCN on achieving the CAP and leading the university on our broader campus sustainability options and goals.
2. Identify and prioritize both short- and long-term strategies needed to reach university goals outlined in the CAP.
3. Collect, analyze and report out on all data as a measure of the university’s sustainability goals such as annual GHG inventory and third-party surveys such as STARS, Sierra Club and NACUBO.
4. Work directly with facilities managers and consultants on projects that support the universities climate goals.
5. Work closely with others to develop and maintain a comprehensive energy management plan in conjunction with the CAP and university sustainability initiative to help advance and support the university’s goal to become a leader in environmental excellence among higher education.
6. Establish and maintain connections with the First Year programs, Sustainability program and Student Life groups on sustainability initiatives.
7. Act as a resource for both research and development for students, student groups, and support of faculty and staff departments.
8. Work closely with the grounds department and related committees to enhance university property as a site for biodiversity and environmental services.
9. Collaborate with managers on the successful performance of central utility systems for campus steam, condensate, chilled water, domestic water, storm water, sanitary sewage, and associated infrastructure.
10. Develop and recommends maintenance and capital project priorities for equipment and operational strategies to maximize operating efficiency and corrective strategies impacting utility consumption.
11. Recommend options for campus purchasing that reduce our environmental footprint.
12. Provide input on engineering, design, construction and maintenance services in support of universities sustainable strategies.
13. Provide project management services for assigned projects; oversee major/minor renovations and construction projects.
14. Maintain fiscal responsibility within operating and capital budgets.
15. Participate in the development of departmental policies.
16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Science or related field.  Five (5) years of experience in green/sustainability related management.  A Master’s degree and three (3) years of experience will be considered. 

Exceptions to these minimum qualifications may be made for candidates with unique credentials, which may include those listed under the “preferred qualifications.”

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience in a higher education environment with oversight of those areas of responsibility required for this position.
2. Experience working in shared governance or in a similar system, which requires collaboration, engagement with stakeholders, and relationship management.
3. Experience with all phases of construction projects (design, procurement, construction management, budgeting).
4. Strong technology skills and experience using technology to find efficiencies and improve service delivery.
5. Strong quantitative abilities
6. Successful track record of change management and the development of high-performance cultures.
7. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
8. Comfort and aptitude working with all members of the university community, including students, faculty, staff, the president, and trustees.
9. Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically and creatively, finding new and better ways to accomplish objectives, and fostering an environment, which brings this out in others.
