Director, Capital Management and Campus Operations

Friends Academy seeks an exceptional individual with executive-level capital and operations experience, excellent interpersonal capabilities, and an empowering leadership style to join the organization as Director, Capital Management and Campus Operations (“Director”).
Reporting to the Head of the School, the Director is a key member of the school’s leadership team and is responsible for providing strategic leadership of all activities within campus construction and operations. The incumbent will identify and synthesize campus needs and work with campus planning efforts to develop and lead the articulation of the school’s multi-year campus master and renewal plans.
Work with the Director of Finance, Operations & Strategic Projects to ensure alignment of financial sources and uses; create a data-based approach for integrating deferred maintenance and infrastructure requirements; and play a leadership role in the planning and execution related to sustainability efforts on campus.
The search is being conducted due to the continuous advancement of the institution and the desire to ensure that the physical environment continues to reflect the school’s mission and vision and keeps pace with the changing needs and expectations of the educational community.

Duties & Responsibilities
Manage Friends Academy’s significant investment in renewing and maintaining its campus, ensuring that the facilities and campus support and enable the school to fulfill its mission to provide clean, safe, efficient, dynamic and structurally sound facilities that offer students and staff the best possible atmosphere for meaningful teaching, learning and work.
Drive the high-level plan for the implementation of the campus renewal program over the next decade, making steady, visible progress.
Serve as in-house Owners Representative, ensuring the successful planning and delivery of all projects that accomplish the agreed program and scope within, or below, budget and on schedule, with a level of quality that meets standards and enhances the campus. Obtain the best possible solution at the lowest total lifetime cost that achieves the program—including design and aesthetic—objectives.
Collaborate in partnership with the Director of Finance, Operations & Strategic Projects, the clerk of the Buildings and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees, and the senior leadership of the school. Convene and lead committees that relate to campus renewal and capital programs.
Support colleagues in Advancement (fundraising) as they seek to inspire and engage donor interest for campus renewal.
Ensure a top-flight Facilities department that reflects a clear understanding of the school’s direction, as well as national trends and innovations in the management of school capital improvement programs and facilities operations.
Prioritize renovation and repairs needed to steward and maintain the campus and develop and manage plans and budgets and to best accomplish campus stewardship and renewal.
Oversee the Facilities Management function of the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the campus. Establish and monitor performance targets for operational effectiveness, financial efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Promote the professional development of the department staff with a strong work ethic within the department. Effectively oversee the full range of departmental activities and services, and capably lead the senior management team in fulfillment of the department’s objectives.
Serve as a politically astute, key spokesperson and leader for the school on physical planning, design, development, construction, and facilities / operations issues, developing and maintaining a positive relationship with the school community, the towns of Locust Valley and Glen Cove, and state and local government agencies.
Desired Skills & Experience
A strong leadership profile: articulate, diplomatic, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative teamwork. Excellent customer service and presentation skills.
Experience leading the capital planning process and the life cycle delivery of large capital projects. Deep knowledge of the regulatory environment, including construction permitting requirements, workplace safety requirements, and environmental regulations.
Strong service orientation and an understanding of both the service and stewardship missions of the school.
Ability to communicate with all levels of staff, faculty, and administration clearly and effectively.
Experience and knowledge of implementing environmentally sustainable solutions.
Strong financial acumen, budgeting, and decision-making skills.
Demonstrated commitment to and experience in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion work in an independent school or similar environment.
Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, facility or construction management or combination of education and work experience in related fields. Advanced degree a plus.
